Less is More

It took me more than four decades to comprehend the saying “less is more” and I’m referring to my clothes.  It all started when I was cleaning my rather messy but organized (yes there is such a thing) bedroom.  It came to the point that I ran out of room to store my clothes (I already have 6 bins excluding my overflowing closet).  My cheeky son walked into my room and declared that if I don’t do anything about it, my room will turn into a landfill.  Now, that’s SCARY!!  I mean, I’m terrified of garbage let alone a landfill.  But yeah, that was the turning point.

So, I’ve been donating and consigning my clothes and I am down to two bins so far.  My goal this year is to declutter my house including my books, photos, and jewelry.  Needless to say, I feel liberated now that I have less stuff.

I’ve read so many blogs about creating a capsule wardrobe such as this post.  I also referred to this book a lot, when I get stuck on how to organize my clothes.  It feels so good to step back from my endless cycle of fashion trends (hence the lack of fashion posts).  I don’t feel obligated to buy new clothes.  I’ve been saving money and will only buy classic pieces especially when it comes to handbags.  How about you guys?  Any strategy on minimizing your closet?

I need to donate my clothes, I have too many lying around that I haven’t worn in so long!

It’s nice to declutter old things and it does feel liberating. I’ve been selling my old things on eBay. I don’t need the headache of seeing my old things going nowhere.

Very cute outfit and that bag! I am in the same boat! I must do something about it as well. I used to buy the same item in different colors and now I’m stuck with a whole set that is even harder to throw away. It’s become a collection sort of… halp! hehe

Good for you Jo! Decluttering is such a liberating and empowering process. I went classic with my wardrobe over a year ago and you will not regret doing this. Even if it means less clothing, it actually provides so much more in terms of wardrobe options. I usually clean my closet twice a year just to maintain it.

I have been downsizing my wardrobe too and so far it’s been much easier to dress. I am starting to hoard shoes though!

Great photo! Glad you were able to do some spring cleaning this year – with the help of your son! ;) everytime I clean and declutter, I feel so refreshed and less stressed. Less is certainly more!

Yes, I’ve been purging slowly, especially since we’ve moved. It is really quite liberating and I also try to keep only classic pieces or pieces I will really love and reach for time after time. I left a lot of clothing in NYC too though so have to work on that next!

Jo, I think what you’re doing (downsizing) is so awesome! I started getting rid of things when I first started blogging. It was liberating. It’s been a 5 year process. I’m on my last bit of stuff! I donated. I sold. I put some things in the garbage (last resort). I have finally found a style that works for me and I will build on that.
